A couple of days ago my speedo and odometer went out, and the code checker said malfunctioning speed sensor. i've got a new speed sensor, i would just like to know where it is located, so i can check it and it's wire. it's finals time here and i havent had time to go under my truck to look. if anyone could help with the location, and give some tips, i'd appreciate it.
It's on top of the rear differential. You'll see a couple of wraped wires running to it. There is one bolt holding it on. First check that the wire harness is connected properly. If it is, maybe it is your Sensor. If it is not, try to recall whether or not you got the underneith of your drivers set wet about the time it started acting up. If so, search out my user name for an unrelated but related ABS issue.
ok, i read that thread, and it was very informative. thanks a bunch. i did some offroading, but nothing wet. the problem arose a week later, so i'm assuming it's the sensor in the rear end, not the junction box. should i order a rear ABS sensor, or a vehicle speed sensor? my auto parts shop back home can get anything.
Yeah, do a search and read about it a little on this board.... could be getting wet from under the truck. The individual wire connections are open to corrosion under the truck where they join this "cup of water" I'm talking about.
should i order a rear ABS sensor, or a vehicle speed sensor? .
The sensor doesn't actually cost that much really.... I think mine was $35 at the dealer. It is simple to replace. I have an extra one. I live in colorado .....
Hmmm.
I'll check that also, thanks. i'll check all that out and come back if i cant figure it out. there really is something to this forum thing, my brother uses one religiously for his car (which needs work constantly), it would be blasphemy to mention it's make here, however.
I found I had a similar problem after I would run my Ranger thru a car wash; the washes with the under vehicle spray (to get winter crap off). The connection under the drivers seat is, in my opinion, poorly designed with the wires and terminals exposed. A high pressure under wash easily can get water in that connection. Way too easily! After things dry out operation goes back to normal until the next time I wash the truck. I will avoid the under wash in the future.
what does the speed sensor look like? the only thing that is plugged into my rear end is a short silver cylinder looking thing, and that is certainly not what my parts dealer gave me.
thanks.
well, i ran into a problem when the part that is listed for the 98 ranger is not the part that i need. it turns out that the truck is an early 98 with a 97 axle in it, so the sensor is different. the problem has been worked out now, and the part comes in in the morning, and is cheaper!
thanks, and it was all due to the help on this forum. i would have never figured it out on my own, and i was not about to pay some mechanic to fool around under there for hours. i'll come back here for any future problems.
