road draft tube

I need an idiots guide to the road draft tube on my '64 292. What is its purpose, and how does it work. My truck seems not to use much oil as long as I keep trips short (<10 miles), but on longer trips (15-20 miles) it uses a lot pretty quickly. The engine doesn't seem to drip a lot while it's just sitting, but must be blowing the oil under way. It sounds like from stuff I've read here that the tube may be clogged causing back pressure and if I clean it I may reduce my oil consumption. I realize I probably need to change the rear main seal as well ... how hard is that to do and can it be done without pulling the engine?

i,ve never seen the tube plugged on a 64.the ones on the side of the engine used to.if it was plugged it would leak like crazy at the rear seal.the reason it doesn,t use a lot on short drives is it doesn,t get hot enough to thin the oil.

This truck sat for a long time, it's possible that it has a dirt dauber nest or something in the tube. What is involved in removing and cleaning the tube?

Well that doesn't sound too hard ... I'll give it a try. Is there some kind of filter in the tube or is it just open?

My tube seemed clogged a little while back so I decided to take it off and clean it out. The problem for me was that after I got it unbolted I couldn't get it past the distributor without removing it.
So what I did was leave it undone, and ran a stiff wire with a little bit of rag tied (very tightly) through the tube.
Now I know this is probably not a great way to do this, but it worked for me, and now it is unclogged.

One thing though, my 292 is in a Fairlane, so I don't know if the distributor will be an interference with a truck like it was for me. I just didn't feel like turning it into a long drawn out deal.

Hoping someone can help, I am trying to locate a draft tube, or breather tube for my 59 f100 292 V8. I have the top canister part, I need the bottom flange and tube assembly. I have searched everywhere, came up with three different part numbers no one can identify. If anyone has one, or the correct part number,I would greatly appreciate the help. I checked all the FTE sponsors.
