how safe are chips?

i just bought a 01 and was wondering how safe are the 100 hp settings on the 4 bank switch chips? can i just set it and run safely? also will it hurt to run a 4 inch exhaust and no muffler or cat? what about propane injection is it pretty safe? thanks, Jesse

If you don't have them already GET THE GAUGES before you do anything.

Before running any chip/tuner, and especially propane, you should invest in a set of gauges to monitor the engine, transmission, and turbo boost. It's also a good idea to have a 4" exhaust, aftermarket downpipe, and air intake before you start modding. These will help keep the engine running in a safe temperature range. It's also a good idea to make some modifications to strengthen your transmission if you are going to run some serious HP.

1)if your '01 is a diesel it should not have a cat. 2) a larger exhaust(no muffler even better) and gauges are a must( in my opinion) for a big chip 3) safe? that all depends on your right foot. i will say, i just got rid of a 3 pos. flip chip that was not working wright, it was stuck in the 100 hp setting all the time. it was very hard to keep my egt's down while towing a moderate load, to the point that i would say it was not safe. as far as propane goes, dont know, havent got there yet...

If anything, you should at least install a pyro gauge. Even with the exhaust and intake mods you can easily get dangerous temps out of the engine.

So I guess the short answer is no, don't run the 100 hp setting as is now.

Jesse,

Contact Heatstroked about his crankcase bypass. He has done a nice job on a kit for this mod along with instructions. He will hook you up.
