2002 cut out during drive

2002 cut out during drive
The wierdest thing happened today. The temp outside was 24F, light snow. I warmed the truck up for about 3-4 minutes, and proceeded to work. About 15 miles out I was in 4wd, 6th gear going about 55 mph, coolant temp gauge almost in the middle, the engine seems to have stopped for about 1/2 second and resumed, and continued to do this intermittently for about 20 seconds. It felt like I was running out of fuel, except that I just filled my truck yesterday after seeing price of diesel jump up 5 cents a gal at competitors. The engine light flashed on and off a two or three times, but didn't stay on. Any hints as to what happened? Should I take it in.
My truck 2002, F-250 SC PSD, 4x4, 6sp, manual transfer, 9500 mi.
Also, my oil consumption seems to be slowing since the first oil change to Shell Rotella.

DRAIN FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPERATOR, SOUNDS LIKE WHAT MINE DID, BUT THE LIGHT STAYED ON AND ENGINE STARTED COUGHING, I SHUT IT OFF ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND DRAINED THE FILTER UNTIL EMPTY AND FIRED IT BACK UP, RAN FINE LIGHT STAYED ON FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES THEN WENT OFF. NO PROBLEMS SINCE, I DRAIN THE FILTER ABOUT EVERY 3 MONTHS. 97 F-250
