Why does post count seem important?

I have seem folks post a topic stating when they have reached a certain post count. (No offense Vampiro, your recent topic re-ignited my questions is all.)

I have also seen references to people "padding" their post count with non-substantive replies and such. Commenting that these types of actions are bad things.

I have noticed quite a few references to post count as a symbol of "rank", so to speak. Even the software here gives you various titles based on post count.

Why does it seem to be so important?

Does more posts make for a "better" user?

Do you feel that a reply coming from someone with a lot of posts is more valid than someone with fewer posts?

I have my own opinions (that I'll keep to myself for now). Curiousity about yours is my motivation with this post. My 1972nd.

Why does post count seem important?

Because I have done it, I'll explain what was going on in my mind when I did it.

I can't remember exactly which ones I announced but they usually corresponded to something I thought funny.
One was called 1000 Flushes .... er posts
As in something catchy to read, and usually included something humourous.
I was reacting with amazement to myself for having done so many.
Like Mileage markers on a highway.
That's all, Nothing more !
"It just ended up that way"

It wasn't a " Look at me,look at me" kind of thing if that's what you were thinking.

I would hope that everyone in some way would put a smile on one's face, get them to laugh, get them to THINK,and answer the question,or let the person or person's know I appreciated their response.

Why does post count seem important?

Dennis you seem to have taken it a bit personal. (not my intent at all). I was hoping ya'll could answer the question that I laid out rather than "defend" prior posts! I, too, am amazed when I look at my post count. (not to often) It sometimes makes me think that maybe I should get a life!! LOL

What really got me thinking of this is a few guys on another site. That particular site doesn't show the number of posts a user has but these fellas seemed it was necessary for them to include the number of posts they have had in their signatures. I'm curious as to what drives that desire.

Hey Monsta ,I really didn't take it personal.
I just I thought I would give as in depth an answer as possible.

Ancient proberb:
" Be leery of people who remain quiet,as you know not what is on their mind",No need to be leery of those who speak,as they are telling you what IS on their mind"

Regarding your further questions.

I would think it would have something to do with Self Esteem in some cases and the desire to bring attention to themselves to being accepted with others.

Why does post count seem important?

I don't find posts all that important as long as I can get my questions answered and help others at times. (1948 and 1967 discussions) As for this general discussion area....well....this is a hobby, isnt' it...(Trucks) jim

You know, this is a tough crowd.

If you misspell-you get slammed.
If you post in the wrong forum-you get slammed.
If you ramble and go off topic-you get slammed.

To be sure, the last two should be addressed by the moderators (which I am aware you are) but in a gentle way. I'm sure Mr. Payne would appreciate that since he would like membership to grow. But,

Do you now get slammed if you post too much?

Monsta, it's kinda difficult not to take offense at your post since my post of 26 april fits the first 3 criteria of your post perfectly. But, I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. If it was intended for me, then I apologize unreservedly.

I enjoy coming to this site, and I feel that a few of my topics were worthwhile. I try not to post or reply otherwise.

I love the fact that it is a discussion board and not private. That would make it a "clique". And "cliques" aren't open to membership.

That being said, and in answer to your post, I cannot understand why anyone would want to "pad" the post count. It doesn't mean anything to myself as far as the advice goes. One can usually tell whether the person knows what they're talking about or not.

When you see post counts as high as Dennis' and yourself, you tend to think that the person knows what they're talking about. Even if you guys were mechanically ignorant (which you obviously are not), by now you guys should be able to build a truck!A post count like yourself indicates (to me at least) that this person has a vast amount of knowledge to share, mechanical and otherwise. But I like to read the newbies posts as well. Just because they're new, doesn't mean they don't know their way around Fords. I've been wrenching 26 years myself. I learn something new here constantly.

My hat's off to you guys. You do a fine job. I certainly hope you don't take offense at this. It's just your post disturbed me more than a little.

Chuck

Absolutely NOT! It really fits what I see on other sites more than what I see here.

>Do you now get slammed for posting too much?

Come on! That wasn't what I was getting at! Not at all! Read it again! I am wondering why folks wear their post count like rank! If somehow it matters then I want to know why. I may agree with it! Or I may not. Won't stop me from helping others out here. As for the other slamming stuff, you'll have to go to the source for those.

>That being said, and in answer to your post, I cannot
>understand why anyone would want to "pad" the post count.

Me either. It's the "why" someone would pad that intrigues me. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong. I'm just wonderin'.

I'm sorry that my post disturbed you. It wasn't my intention. Dennis' reply kinda hit something. Self-esteem. I find it almost sad that someone would garner self-esteem through the number of posts that they have accumulated. (The stars: yes. That is a direct response from others as to what they feel you (or your info provided) are "worth" to them.)

If everyone is on the same wave length as you are, as far as post counts are concerned, then I don't see how self-esteem can be gained.

Once again this in NOT directed at anyone in particular, just a simple curiousity that I have developed whilst cruising the numerous forums I subscribe to.

Even though I disturbed you, you still took the time to pass a compliment onto me. Thank you. Guys like you make this site the BEST!

Why does post count seem important?

In my opinion people use the post count has a way for saying, "See I know what I am talking about." They believe that the post count gives them a peeking order of higher rank. Also it becomes a way of ownership to have more post then the next person.

Much the same way because you have used the same parking spot at work for 15 years that spot as now become yours. How dare someone park in your spot? In live chat, such as the ones used on AOL, the people that have used the "room" the longest have become "reg’s" and the people that may just have joined are called "newbie’s". Even though a "newbie" might be very well versed on the subject his opinions are not rated as high as a "regs" because he is a new and unfamiliar face.

In the "real world" we use keys that show or tell us that a person is believed to have knowledge or possession. A person that has a PhD in a field is believed to be very educated. People with grey hair are believed to be aged and have vast experience. A ring on a finger can mean that you are “owned” by another. While a wino lying in the street is thought to be worthless to society, and have no home.

Some people feel their number of post is their rank, their PhD if you will. While others feel their number is their way of marking their territory; much the same way a dog marks a tree. As for me, I do not care how many a post a person has, or how many stars have found their way next to his/or her name. What I do care about is that I am treated with respect as I have shown respect to others. No one on here is the God of Ford. Not one of use knows every detail or every number and none of us, NOT EVEN I (My wife cannot believe I just wrote that) as all the answers.
