Shudder when coming to a stop
I have an '02 F250 Powerstroke 4X4 that always produces a shudder or couple of thuds (for lack of a better description) every time I come to a complete stop. It's like the tranny is gearing down at that point. Then upon acceleration the two or three thumps/shudders/thuds happen again like the truck is gearing back up again. Other than that the tranny doesn't seem to be acting up. Does anyone know what this might be?
My truck does the same thing but only on occasion when I stop quickly. I brought my 1999 F250 5.4L/ZF547 to the dealer and they couldn't figure it out. My 94 F150 with 4.9L/E4OD never did it but my 2002 F150 with 4.6L/4R70W and my Chevrolet K2500 with 5.7L/4L80E did the same thing , but again, on occasion. I also brought the Chev to the dealer, but of course, nothing could be determined. In my case, it's probably not the torque converter because my 1999 F250 was a 5-speed and my current truck is a 5.4L/6-speed. I don't think it would be the driveshaft although I have a 2-piece, there is absolutely no noise or looseness/sloppiness in it at all. I think it could be the truck adjusting the idle since it only happens when I stop quickly. While I'm driving or coasting in neutral at speeds above 10 mph, the idle stays at 1000 rpm. When I slow down huh... slowly?!, the idle creeps back down to 800 rpm when the truck reaches 10 to 5MPH and under. If I stop quickly, the idle doesn't drop from 1000 right away but takes a second or two to get back to 800 but it doesn't always shudder. Just a guess. (Probably wrong)
I posted this problem back in May and just wanted to give a quick update. I took the truck in last week to have the dealer look at the problem. I took a short test ride with the technician so that he could feel the problem. Later that day I got a call back and the problem turned out to be a fozen U-joint. Parts were ordered, parts came in. I picked the truck up just a short time ago and to my surprise (and delight), the dealer, thinking swiftly, realized the other U-joints may go as well and went ahead and replaced my entire drive shaft(s) from tranny to differential. Certainly am glad I bought that extended warranty. Everything was covered. The truck was ready to go with a fresh wash and a shiny new drive shaft underneath. A beautiful thing. The dealership was top notch and they have a new customer. You gotta love this going above and beyond thing. My service rep showed me the busted up, cracked spindle bearings. They didn't look good. Anyway, on my way now to lake Mohave with the Chapparal sport boat in tow. Thanks to my new friends at Santa Margarita Ford.
