I just picked up an 86 Full size Bronco ( 5.0L EFI ) a couple weeks ago , it was driven here from about 2 hours away and the guy who brought it here ( my cousin ) had no problems at all. I started it up the next day - touched the key and it ran like a top - right on I thought good deal for 1000.00 bucks. about 10 minutes later it ran out of gas and stalled. O.K. no prob , throw some gas in it and away I go right .... WRONG ! the truck started but all it did was spit, sputter, back fire and just kept stalling. I checked a few spark plug wires and there appears to be lots of spark , I had my dad turn it over while I held the fuel bleed off valve ,( looks like an air valve stem ) and there was gas spraying all over the place so it appears that I have lots of gas and lots of spark. I am not very familiar with these trucks and I am really fed up with the whole situation.
If what I just descibed is a common problem for these vehicles or if any of you guys that know these trucks could give me some insight on this problem , I would be very appriciative of your help.
Just a guess, but I think that you can get gas to spray through the valve but still not have enough pressure to run the system. Try measuring the fuel pressure to see if it meets specs. Also check your air filter. Don't forget that important component. I could just be starving for air.
the air filter is brand new , what do I use to check the fuel pressure ? I should also mention that it was back firing out the exhaust with major amounts of black smoke, and I noticed after it wouldn't start that the little red wire on the soelnoid was melted against the live wire from the battery, I just replaced the soelnoid and the red wire and cleaned up all my conections. so it turns over to beat hell and fires here and there, almost like it's going to start .... but it doesn't.
I should add right now that I just checked the fuel filter along the frame ( black plastic canister) and there is no filter inside of it ...... could I have plugged injectors ???? and if so are they difficult to clean ?
With it being FI'ed, it has an ECU (Electronic Control Unit or computer)
that monitors all the sensors.
You'd have to pick up a service manual, but it will tell you how to access
the ECU to get the error codes. The error codes will direct you as to what's
wrong with your truck.
I pulled off the injetors and cleaned them up , they were all really clean , I am now going to check for vaccum leaks and see what happens timing is right on the money #1 cyl is lined up right up.I gotta say this is the first ford I've ever owned and I am not impressed so far.
Like all vehicles, they need regular maintenance and the occasional repair.
Fail to do so and any vehicle (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, whatever) will leave you walking.
And you did buy a used vehicle so it should not be expected to be perfect.
Since it's EFI, you need to run the codes and see if it has any.
Black smoke out the tail pipe is a rich condition.
Did you check your Distributor timing?
A backfire could have sheared the shaft to gear pin and let the timing go way off.
It also sounds like a timing chain might have skipped a gear.
Not to mention any possible electrical problems (see "run it for codes" above)
All you need for an engine to run is air, fuel and spark.
After that it's ammount (related to pressure) of fuel to air, valve and spark timing.
I'm not slammin fords but , I worked on a lot of vehicles and always managed to get them running , but this thing is really getting to me . today I replaced the MAP sensor and The ignition control module simply because I understand they commonly go on these trucks. there is some sort of soelnoid with wires and a plug hooked up right where the two air intake hoses attach up to the throttle body .... could that be a possibility ? and there is an egr valve ( I think that's what it is ) could that be a possibility ? I really don't have the $$ right now to take this thing in and have it diagnosed.
You need to get the codes before you start anything.
Ditto...
To throw parts at the truck hoping to find the right one is
a waste of time and money (you could have it diagnosed by
the time you find the right one).
You'll need to get a service manual - you can picks these up
at your local parts house.
In the service manual, it has the instructions on how to pull
the codes from the ECM.
Usually for the older vehicles you won't need any special code
readers.
Once you get these codes, we can help you better.
The item with the wires that you mentioned sounds to me like
the throttle position sensor - usually if these go bad, you'll have
a dead spot as you drive where it feels like the engine cuts out
on you - it could be bad enough to not let the truck start, but
again, you'll need the service manual to correctly set up the
TPS.
The EGR valve won't keep the engine from starting.
