HEY FELLAS, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. I HAVE A 97 PSD AUTO WITH 104,000 MILES. IN THE LAST WEEK I HAVE HAD TROUBLES GETTING THE RIG STARTED WHEN I DON'T PLUG IT IN. I'M THINKIN THE GLOW PLUGS ARE BAD, BUT NOT SURE HOW TO CHECK THEM, I ALSO HEARD THAT I SHOULD CHANGE THE MODULE THAT CONTROLS THEM, IS THIS TRUE. I KNOW ITS GETTING FUEL CAUSE IT SMOKES RIGHT AWAY WHEN CRANKED OVER. ANY COMMENTS WOULD BE MOST WELCOME.
i have never not been able to get my truck started but on mornings with a temp below 35 degrees my truck will occilate when it cranks over. i turn the key and the truck will start and rev high then rev low then rev high then rev low and so on for about 15 seconds then run smooth. i was under the impression that you did not need to plug these trucks in unless the temp is below 20 degrees. if i plug it in it it does not do this.
There is a solenoid mounted on a bracket above the right bank valve cover (if there are 2 solenoids it is the one to the rear) that looks exactly like a regular Ford starter solenoid. Replace that first (they are cheap and easy to get to). We've had some problems with those solenoids malfunctioning.
it helps to push down on the accelarator when starting the engine.I recall in the owners manual somewhere on that. on the 99's 00's and 01's buses we run we check the glow plugs with a scanner.I', not sure what the 97 setup is, but I'm almost sure its the same.
