No Power/ belches smoke below 2000

Can I get some direction as to what to look for...

I have no power, and am getting a lot of over-rich black smoke, until the turbo kicks in at about 2000rpm. ('97 PSD/ Auto) After that, the power returns somewhat, and the smoking stops.

Thanks for the help.......

The filter isn't new, but I could only wish that it might be solved as easily as a plugged air filter... not with my luck. I'll replace it though, and thanks for the reply!

I was thinking that I might be looking at having to replace faulty injectors, etc.... the rig has 248,k and I have no idea how well the previous 2 owners have kept up maint.

Thanks again...

I'm not sure injectors are the problem. Obviously if you are belching black smoke the engine is getting too much fuel for the air supply. Is the smoke black like you see coming out of the big rigs or blue?

Its not whitish-blue, but rather really dark, and starts coming on about 15-1600, and builds until the turbo builds boost around 2200. Thanks

Speaking of smoking...

What would be the cause of my 97 PS that IS belching the "blueish-white smoke" on acceleration, that you asked about? (It idles fine, but stumbles and runs rough, when driving... the white smoke like-wise stops when the turbo kicks in, about 2200rpm)

From SteveBaz's website:

Smoke Analysis

White smoke:

Caused by unburned fuel passing through the engine. Some white smoke is normal on cold start-ups. Excessive white smoke could be an indication of inoperative glow plugs, loose injectors, low compression from worn rings or bent connecting rods, or coolant leak into the cylinders--head gasket or injector well sleeves.

Black smoke:

Caused by excessive fuel for the amount of air drawn into the cylinders. Some black smoke on hard accelerate or at higher altitudes is normal. Excessive black smoke could result from restricted intake or exhaust, inoperative leaking or weak turbo, intake hose(s) leaks, leaking or worn injectors, fuel return or supply restriction, stuck Exhaust Back Pressure Regulator valve or solenoid. Also PCM inputs such as BARO MAP ICP or EBP sensors.

Blue or blue/white smoke:

Caused by insufficient fuel or oil consumption. Normal when engine is cold or idling for extended periods. Excessive smoke could be caused by air in the fuel, contaminated fuel, loose or plugged injectors, worn or leaking injector o-rings, thermostat stuck open, oil consumption, or plugged crankcase depression regulator valve. Also PCM inputs such as MAP or ICP sensors.
