my uncle has 90 F-350,7.3 NA, 4X4,5 SPEED.he has recently had some colling troubles.he pulls fairly large three axle fith wheel trailer, and when pulling grade the temp light would come on,and the gauge would go past its regular position.
he has replaced the original radiator, fan clutch and also replaced the thermostat with a IH one.he then went to pickup a oliver super 77,thinking he had it fixed, but it still has the same problem.
if he runs on level ground, say the NYS thruway,it stays fairly cool.but as soon as he starts working it she gets hot.
he has a manual gauge, along with the ford gauge and the manual one will read 230 if he pushes it.he has a little over 200,000 on the engine, with only some head work done at about 100,000.the timing is set to stock, and he runs the banks y-pipe,but he has never touched the fuel system or modified the truck and he ordered it new in 90.we are both preety good wrench turners, but were stumped, any ideas besides the normal stuff like air locks and the such.
hows it run is there a slight miss? I 'm thinking may be an injector pump or injectors may need to be changed. When is the last time he delt with them? Just trying to think of ideas don't know for sure.
Looking at that list, sounds like the only thing he hasn't changed is the water pump. And maybe the engine! 200k huh! He must have put a pump on it by now, probably a couple.
As Malcolm stated above, it sounds like the water pump. They do have a tendancy to get goofy internally. Just be sure to put the bolts back in the same position as there are few that actually penetrate the water system and need to be sealed with some type of water proof sealant on the threads. Also, could be problem with timing and tooooo much fuel. Does it smoke more than usual during the working period when it does overheat? You want to be careful with getting the heads too hot, they may crack. Keep us posted to your findings.
i went thro the same thing i replaced the water pump raditor and 3 thermostats. then i put in a t stat from ford. it still runs hotter then it everr did before when ya work it and as soon as ya let off it cools rite down again. i cant figure it out either.
nope it has the original water pump on it.that is what we were thinking also, its really the only thing left!
it has no miss or anything like that.runs real good.he has never turned the fuel up,or advanced the timing, its all stock except for the banks y-pipe.
I have an '89 7.3 and it has started running 220F according to the manual gage I just installed. I recently changed the water pump and this did no good. What is the corrent temperature for this engine to run at highway speeds. This truck has about 165,000 miles. Maybe the timing needs adjusted.
Thanks
Well, today I changed the thermostat in the 1989 7.3 diesel. I checked the old thermostat and a new one at the same time in a saucepan full of boilin what hotter. The one I removed from my truck did not open til 210 degrees. So I changed it. Drove the truck and this only helped lower the temp to 210 on the highway from yesterdays 220 degrees. So, I began to drain the coolant from the truck so I could check the flow in the radiator. I had just turned off the engine...it was reading 200 degrees. But the coolant in the bottom of the radiator and the temp of the lower hose was COOL! Hot on top and cool on the bottom. Tommorrow, I will check the flow through the radiator and if good, I will change the water pump again.. lots of fun.
