HI, I'm new to this site. I'm 16 years old, and I'm thinking about buying an '86 F250 4X4 with a 6.9 liter Diesel. I was wondering if any of you know what the factory Horsepower and Torque ratings for this engine is. Thanks for any help.
I don't know what the HP is, but my input is this.
the 7.3 has more kick than the 6.9 and of course the PSD has more kick than the 7.3
any way I used a '84 E350 6.9 for at least 5 years. retired it with more than 240000 miles. the engine was origanal and burned a little oil. but it retired do to extensive ford body cancer. and the tranny crapped out again. and I'm sure it would have gone another 100k with no problems. it had a leaky head gasket so I only replaced the one head. and ran it for 30000miles before the tranny quit. so I took the good head and now am going to transplant it in to my dads '84 which blew a gasket.
Well, it at least sounds like a tough engine, which is what I'm looking for. That F250 needs 2 new tires, and something is wrong with the ignition lock, the key won't turn. That was dissapointing, I wanted to see if it would start. The guy that owns it wasn't there, just his mom, so I didn't get any help there. I told her to have him call me. But besides that, I think its a good truck. Its got a manual transmission, 4 wheel drive, dual tanks, and there's only a little rust over the rear fenders.
If I am not mistaken 160hp and 320 ft lbs for a stock engine, but all depends on where the injection pump is set for timing and fuel delivery, as these will make a difference on the output. These ratings are measured at the back of engine not on the ground numbers. On the ground numbers will be much less because of the gear boxes that must process the power transfer. I have been told by ATS while make a choice on turbo systems that a 7.3 with no turbo will put 80-90 horse on the ground and 120 horse with a turbo. The 6.9's are not that far behind the 7.3's.
I just remembered, my best friend's dad told me once that he used to have an '85 F250 with a 6.9 and a manual. I should ask him what the truck's all about.
I own an 85, with the 6.9L Diesel. I'm not sure of the numbers either, but it is a very good engine. Mine has 142,000 miles, an aftermarket Banks Turbo, and the 4 speed manual. I added the Gear Vendor Overdrive.
The trans. needs a few more gears hence the Overdrive. (It allows me to split 3rd and 4th, and gives me 4th overdrive.)
I have been very happy with mine. You should get a lot of good life out of this one.
One point to ask before you buy . . . Find out if the owner knows about addint the F-15 additive to the coolant. This engine creates so much torque at idle, that it will cavitate the coolant around the 8th cylinder jacket. The additive keeps the coolant at the appropriate level to prevent this. If coolant additive has not been added, there could be pitting around the cylinder that could cause problems for you in the future.
