I started noticing a delay when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. I doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes it takes a good second for the shift to complete. If I touch the gas before this happens there's a clunk which I assume is bad things happening. I've gotten in the habit of waiting to feel the tranny engage before hitting the gas, but I'd rather solve the problem. The dealer claimed that's just the way these things work sometimes; hmmm. I was thinking about getting a SuperChip but I run at 87 octane and I read they don't provide a performance increase in that mode. Will a chip eliminate the shift delay?
TSB 01-11-7 says..........
Some vehicles equipped with a 4R70W automatic transmission exhibiting a no forward or a delayed engagement may have a damaged forward clutch. This may be caused by rapid, Drive (D) to Reverse (R) engagements before the automatic transmission fluid reaches a normal operating temperatures and by Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration causing a lack of Forward Clutch pressure and insufficient lubrication.
Verify forward clutch failure. In order to prevent reoccurrence, the (PCM) should be reprogrammed to the latest level calibration as part of the forward clutch repair procedure.
It might be a good idea to get the fluid pressures checked and maybe get the PCM reflashed. How is the transmission oil? Has it been changed at all?
Had the 30K work done a couple of months ago. The transmission fluid was replaced. The delay occurred before and after the maintenance. I use a garage rather than the dealer for maintenance work. They are licensed for Ford warranty work. They test drove it and didn't notice the delay. Thinking about it I'd say that the delay occurs more often at colder temperatures. I will check into getting the PCM reflashed. Thanks Racerguy!
