'49 PU 4 speed trans
I just got a very nice 49 PU. flathead 6. 4 speed trans(floor shift) that grinds and makes noise in all gears. I would like a newer, smoother application to drive daily. I am interested in a three speed with OD. Is this possible and what do I need to do to accomplish this?

Learn to double clutch, it's a lot easier than changing the tranny

In my case, double clutching is not the only issue. I'm determined to update the tranny and or the rearend. I would appreciate any information in that direction and am open to any helpful suggestion or voice of experience. Many thanks in advance.

It's possible if you're determined. I'm using (putting up with until it fails) my stock tranny - 3 spd HD. When it goes south I'll be hunting a 4 spd OD out of a mid-80's pickup (86-7) or a 5 spd OD from an S10.
Adapter plates are available for applications that need them. Check with Speedway for these.

Thanks for the info mtflat. I talked to Marty at Speedway who presented me with several choices of machining, adaptors, etc. He was a wealth of knowledge. I'm still open to other suggestions esp. from those who have actually hooked up a 3 speed OD behind a flathead 6 on the floor.
