Got a 94 f-150 with an inline 6 4.9. Yesterday I had 8 bags of 50lbs in the back. I noticed got a lil spark knock when it was in third and I tried to make it shift up. This motor is a replacement motor as my last one did the same thing. The only difference is my old motor was doing it really really bad. IT had a cracked head. I noticed this knocking in this motor only after getting the grain. I also filled up the tank the other day, could it just be a bad batch of gas? It still knocks faintly when warmed up even without towing or weight in the back. It only knocks when its really low rpms in third and when I give it gas. I dont have a cracked head or gasket and I have run fuel injector cleaner in the tank. help please!!
Try higher grade fuel.
When was the last time the coolant has been flushed? Radiator cap replaced? Make sure the radiator fan clutch is still good and radiator fan shroud is still in place. If the vehicle is missing the radiator fan shroud, the air flow direction to the radiator will loose as much as 50%.
Too much engine heat (due to more load) would cause it spark knock.
This knock you are hearing, could be it related to low oil pressure?
