How would it be turned off, and how do you turn it back on if its off? My truck pings like a sob if I run anything but premium, at $1.85 a gal I need to get this fixed!!
According to Ken Payne who programs the Diablo Chips and is webmaster, sometimes the factory sets up these ECU's with the knock sensor program. Why they would want to do that is beyond my understanding. I assume if it's in the ECU's software it can be turned on or reflashed, however it is done. I would further expect the Ford dealer could or should be able to tell you for free and do it for free. But that's a different story.
Man I'd love to see $1.85 a gallon for premium here> It's $2.37 to $2.57!!
I reset the computer due to putting higher octane before and still pinging and also modified my stock air box because I have K&N filter on it. Performance from that greatly improved and also helped with pinging close to shift points. If anybody has questions how i modified my air box e-mail me or let me know and I will post it.

Yes I would like to Know how you did this!!! Also My brain sometimes works in OD. but isnt the air intake engineered to alow the correct amount of air in for the truck? And alowing the truck to suck more air I can see the benifit but wouldnt that change the fule air mix? Or would the computer automaticly adjust for this?
The computer should adjust to it. Plus when you buy a K&N intake kit you have to cut the stock Mass air flow sensor out of your intak and place on filter side of tube like stock. For $250 I'll just cut and use mine until I see a need to switch. They do flow better because of smooth design rather than stocks accordian design. I cut from the top of the funnel looking cover at an angle fromreal close to connection point to in front of tab mounts for bottom. Take out old funnel and small 45 degree bent tube. It will make intake noise much louder when you step on it, so if you dont like that, dont cut so much. Mine is cut so all is gone but at angle to provide for structural support.

It is my understanding that all our engines, and all modern engines nowadays have knock sensors. Now granted sometimes the pinging is so bad that the ECU can't retard the spark enough to get rid of all of it, but I always assumed that the Triton engine family had knock sensors in every ECU.
Sorry for my lapse in brain power fellas, I hope none got confused by what I said. I meant to say this:

still have it and havent found out yet. hope to put it on buddy's reader and look for knock sensor setting. Ford said they would just look for codes and not go into setting for me.
My son as a '95 2.3L Ranger ( not a V-10 ). But it has 182,000 Miles on it and still goes 5000 miles between oil changes and has only had Havoline 5w-30 Synthetic in it and no adding oil to it.
Sorry for the delay, was unable to look up knock sensor setting on reader. Probably only capable on Fords. But not for sure. Anotherpiece of metal i had rattling besides the one on the tranny was the heat shield that is above the exhaust by the tranny. Nuts were hand tight on top. If Ford will look up knock sensor issues for you let me know what it says and maybe I can talk the dealer to do it down here.
Hey epdp, Just thought I`d share this with ya , hope it helps.
I was having the same trouble you were with that tapin at the top
of each shift. It drove me crazy for months. Everyone who looked at it
had a different thought as to what it was . Lifters ,rattles, piston slap
nothing just drive it , you name it . Anyway I took it to a small town
shop afew miles from me , and he thought it sounded like rod bearing .
So we pulled one plug wire at a time and then put them back lookin for a change in the sound .And sure enough when we got to # 10 the noise
stoped .put the wire back on ,noise came back.So #10 was the trouble.
So we drop the pan an sure enough#10 bearing was shot. The crank looked great so I chose to sneak just #10 in and hope for the best, so far so good.
no more slapin its only been afew hundred miles so we`ll see what happens.
$485 and one day in the shop I thought it was worth a shot.
Anyway I hope this helps ya, good luck
