7.3IDI

I've already asked you guys how much torque the 6.9 liter had in the "6.9 liter power?" topic. I got an answer of 320 lb-ft. Now I'd like to know how much torque the 7.3 liter IDI had. I'd like to know how much better this engine is over the 6.9. I'd also like any input on which engine you think is better, not just in power, but in reliability as well.

360 ft lbs, is what Gale Banks says in their flyer for a stock 7.3 in a 1992. No real big difference between the 6.9 and 7.3. I have ridden in a buddies 6.9 and it felt about the same as my 7.3l. The engines are both the same for reliablity. I have heard from folks that the 6.9's have a common problem of the head gaskets letting go, and the 7.3's have a common problem of cavitation, but have heard that the 6.9's have it as well but not as common. I was told by an old diesel mech that the cyl walls are thinner on the 7.3 so it stands to reason that it's bound to happen more often in them. He told me this when I was rebuilding my 7.3 that died for pinholes (cavitation) in the cyl walls. I was new to diesels at the time, and had not heard of the problem before. I had just purchased the truck used a few months before. Boy did I learn fast... :-X11

Yeah I've read about that cavitation problem too. Its caused by the cooling system. Its been a long time since I read it, so I don't remember why the coolant causes the cavitation. But I do know that there is a "coolant system maintainer" that you put in the coolant. This prevents all cavitation. So as long as you put in as much as you should as often as you should, you won't have a problem with cavitation.

Well I don't know if the website i went to knew what it was talking about or not but on a 2001 F250 7.3 it said it was 250 horsepower and 525lbs-ft torque.

Yes but . . .-X23

the 7.3 IDI is indirect injection. The 7.3 in the 2001 is direct injection, hence the difference.

By the way, 275 HP with manual trans.

I also heard that motors built after 1/19/2002 will have 300 HP. Maybe just in the label.

FYI:

Engines equipped with manual transmissions built after 1/19/2002 have a revised torque value on the exhaust emissions label (I don't know what the revision says) but, as I understand it, it was either required by the EPA or it was a mistake in the printing of the earlier 2002 EE labels. Anyway, the manual equipped engines are and will continue to be rated at 275 HP. When the new 6.0L Power Stroke becomes available in November of this year it will be rated at 325 HP (presumably at 3600 RPM) and 550 ft. lb. of torque at 2000 RPM.
As to the question of which engine, the Power Stroke or the IDI is better: The Power Stroke has more torque and HP and in many ways is a better engine. But the IDI engine is a good engine if you want a diesel and you're short on cash or if the load you have to haul is not too much for the power output. If money is not a significant object, the Power Stroke is the way to go, in my opinion.
