currently have a 87 f150 with 300 i6 and 4 spd (np435) ... almost never use 1st ... 4th is ok for back roads but really could use a 5th gear for highway ...looking at trading for a 95 with 5 spd and same engine ... anyone have any comments on that engine/transmission combination ???
It's not a T-5, thats used in the mustangs. It's a mazda 5 spd (M5OD). That transmission doesn't have that low 1st gear like the np435 does. That's nice for towing trailers or starting out on hills because it gets you moving easier without burning the clutch so much. The M5OD is a good transmission for an F-150 that isn't being beat on. My F-150 sees 35" tires off road as well as trailers and cargo. I use it more like an F-250 or F-350. I have the M5OD and it's taken everything I've thrown at it so far, but I don't think it'll last very long. It's perfect for the everyday kinda guy who throws a load in there once in awhile, I need something stronger, which will be the ZF 5 speed out of the F-250s and F-350s.
