400 to 460

Hi All,

I'm pulling the 400 outta my 78 F350 2wd automatic. Anyone know if the existing tower and mounts will accept and fit the 460?

Thanks,
-fsh

Superfish..
To save yourself a lot of headachs I would go to www.landlproducts.com and get their motor mount that will take care of this.. They sell for $125/set and they will save you a lot of time and worry.. I think part#030495 is what you would be after.. After building my own for one swap I made up my mind to go this way the next time..

Thanks! I'll look into that site. Did you do this same swap?

Yes I did the same swap that you are now doing.. only I made my mounts.. it took me 5 days with the engine hanging in the engine bay to figure out a motor mount for it. When I got through I had used a flat 390 mount and a piece of 3/8 plate bolted together to make a mount.. It looked good and it fell into the original holes.. But what a headache.. the one thing that you should do is get a pan, extended oil pump tube and a bolt for one main to hold the oil pump tube from a '79 FORD van with a 460 to make it work right.. My brother did his without changing pans and he has put the front pumpkin into the pan more than once.. Any way the mounts from L&L will save a lot of headaches.. good luck and I know you will be more than pleased with the out come

I need to clarifi something here.. I did my swap in a '79 4X4.. the two wheel drive should be a lot easier.. And you may not have to worry about a pan.. I'll check on that part for you

Do you know what year the frame design changed? What I'm getting at is what about trying to find used motor mounts and towers from the closest year pickup that Ford put the 460 into?

One swap I did was a 240 i-6 out of a '66 and dropped in a 360 I pulled out of a '69. Towers went right in. I remember there being holes for the i-6 towers, and holes for the v-8 towers. Incidently, that 360 was eventually swapped out for a 460

Thanks for you help!

Check with the gang on the specific year truck forum, but I "believe" the 460 was available in the 78 truck line...

Question

Can anyone tell me if a 351 Mustang Mk I engine which would be the windsor block I'm thinking will bolt into a '78 F150 351- C6 set up without having to build a new truck around it ? I have the option to this low milage engine for free if it is worth the swap .

If its a 351M in the truck, you will need to swap trannys, the 351M uses the big bell housing, other than that its a straight forward swap. If its a windsor in the truck, then the tranny will be fine. Also, a 351 Mach 1 should be a Cleveland, if Im thinking right

Thumbs up

Thanks Breeze , and you are right it is a Cleveland , all stock , still has the original 4bbl on it . My trouble in the first place is a C-6 that just up and refused to engage in any gear at the pumps one day , which I have never seen happen before with an automatic . Will the Mustang Tranny bolt into my 4X4 drive line though ? It is also there for the taking if I went this route .

You will need to pull the trannys apart and swap the tailshafts between the two. Relatively easy to do on a bench, and all you need is basic handtools and some snapring pliers. That would also be a good time to go ahead and put new clutches and steels in it while its apart, but thats up to you. If you feel the tranny is up to the job without new clutches and such, all you do is pull all the drums and clutch packs out, swap the shafts and put the drums/clutch packs back in. About a 2hr job on a workbench with all the tools there.

Wink All clear now I think :

Thanks again Breeze , I will have to look seriously at this as the present Tranny has to come out . I guess from what you have told me here that I can also just round up a C6
from a Windsor 351 or 302 4X4 drive line which would then have the right tail stock and bell housing . These are fairly common to me as I know a lad that has collected about 17 '77and'78's and over half of them are 4X4 . This will be a learning curve for me as I have always done my own maint. on the rest of this truck since new , I always left the Mill , Tranny , T C and Diffs to the mechanics that worked the 3 bay service shop under my umbrella where I was employed . I appreciate the info and help and gives a guy the encouragment to have at er .
