I have a 95 F-150 Super cab sb 302.I just bought this truck and noticed a slight shimmy when the truck gets to 28-34 mph.It does this acc/ coasting& in neutral.I feel it in the body of the truck not in the steering wheel.I have balanced the tires ,had new u joints put in.Drive shaft checked for balance.Moved front tire to back ,back to front.Changed diff fluid.Front shocks.New carrier on drive shaft.Rotated the shaft 180 x 2.checked motor mounts. When going down or up a hill it is not noticlble.Just around 30mph on flat smooth road.
I have read alot of the post on this subject.Hope-ing for some new ideas.
Thanks
Sounds like rear end bearings to me. Put it in 2WD and put the rear end on jack stands. Make sure you have the front wheels chocked. Run it to the problem MPH and listen to the rear. I looked at a truck that did the same thing. The guy wouldn't budge off the price so I passed on it.
I have a '93 F-150 with a 5.0 liter/302 and am having a similar vibration problem between 35 and 45 mph. It's real annoying when driving around town. I replaced the right ball joints (they were shot) and plan to replace the left ones soon even though they are still tight. I also had the tires rebalanced and that made no difference. The next thing is going to be the driveshaft rotation thing and if that doesn't help I'll have it checked and balanced. I'm hoping that might make a difference. I've also noticed that the vibration is not as noticable when accelorating. As a result I've already gone through a carrier bearing. Any other ideas will be appreciated. The vibration is getting annoying.
I put my truck up on my buddys lift and we saw the problem. The carrier bearing and the center yoke showed a bad vibration.Took it back to the drive line shop.Had it balanced and centered the c- bearing and no more shimmy.Thank you Lord ....lol
Thanks jbjb and zieg. I had to put a new carrier bearing in about three months ago. Didn't solve the problem. I replaced the ball joints on the right side (the lower one was shot). Didn't solve the problem. I noticed a slight amount of movement in the rear u-joint and when I pulled the driveshaft off found that the middle u-joint (my truck has a dual driveshaft) was shot. Changed it out and the vibration stopped completely! I hadn't noticed any of the usual signs of a bad u-joint so I didn't suspect it there. A friend rode with me last week and said he had a similar problem with a Ford and it turned out to be a u-joint.
Thanks for the input, but it turned out it was the u-joints all along. The truck runs nice and smooth now. Now, if I can only figure how to boost the gas mileage (I'm only getting between 10 and 12 mpg varying between town and on the highway).
