oil changes..........

I keep hearing different comments on oil changes, How often does everyone change their oil? Wife has a co-worker that claims her husband changes oil every 8 thousand miles or so, says the diesel with more capacity can go longer and farther between changes.

Diesels are dirty engines. If they are going 8k on coventional oil I don't think thier engine will last its design life. I change oil every 3-4k. Most poeple running oil 8-10k on extended drain intervals are using synthetic oils and bypass filters.

I change my oil every 5,000 miles, I run Delo 400. My oil analysis comes back with flying colors. They recommend I run the next change to 7000 miles but I will keep it at 5,000 I have too much invested in the truck to risk it.

I also change every 5000 miles. I started out using Ford HD Motorcraft oil, but it's just too expensive and the retail outlets don't seem to stock it (any ideas where one can buy it other than from the dealers?).

I did a bit of asking around and was advised that Shell Rotella T 15W - 40 was perfectly fine for the PSD. That's what I've used for the last two oil changes.

Cheers,

Mike

5000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first.

Fresh clean oil never hurt an engine. Old dirty oil... well just keep driving you'll find out. A girl I know ( sorry Ladies but it was a girl ), drove a Tempo about 30,000 miles with no oil change, she just kept adding oil and thought that was all there was to it... once the oil filter stopped passing oil and the sludge was too deep, it seized up. Come to think of it... she never was too bright about much of anything, glad I married who I married and not her.

First time I'm hearing of Delo 400. Is it a synthetic oil and where is it available?

What other brands of oil are generally deemed to be suitable for the PSD? Anyone else using Shell Rotella T?

Delo 400 is Chevron Oil. It is a truck oil, and is available at Wal Mart, and lots of truck stops. Find an oil company in your area and you can buy it in 2.5 gallon jugs. My dad and I have eight 2.5 gallon jugs that we take in and get refilled when we run out. It is a little cheaper if you re-use the jugs.
