Swapping to disc brakes on my 66 f100. Got the front end from what I believe to be a '79. Since I had it out of the truck I decided to install new pivot bushings. After much effort I finally got the old one out but I can't seem to get the new one in. Is there a trick to installing these things?

They have to be pressed in. You MIGHT be able to do it with a large C-clamp.
(By the way, I assume you are referring to the pivot bushings in the ends of the I-beams.)
Thanks Banjo, I'll try the C-Clamp. I started using a hammer but was getting no where.
Got another Question for you. What were the engineers thinking about when they put the oil drain plug over the cross member? What a mess!!!!!!!!!!
If you bought stock rubber type replacements, make sure the metal sleeve came out of the pivot hole. I think the stockers have the sleeve on them. Poly,(like Energy Suspension) bushings reuse the stock sleeve. They are very hard to replace!!!
Hey mrwillie....as to the oil mess Q...I have been wondering that for the better part of 20 years.....I think next time I change the oil in mine I my get creative and make some sort of funnel that can clamp to the crossmember flange thereabouts....Anything to make it a clean job
Have you disassembled the whole thing, with the Ibeams just free? Not attached to radius arms or spindles? If yes, and maybe if no as well, you may be much better off trying to find a local machine shop that will press them in for you. Beware -- if the spindles and radius arms are still attached, you will need some help getting them in a press. It is tricky, to say the least.
If you have a 6 or 8" bench vice (metal, not wood), you might also try that. Let us know how it turns out. I used a press and 2 healthy commrades. FYI, IMHO, I would use the poly bushing, at least on the radius arms. The rubber ones seems awful deformed already.
