Inquiring for a friend about his:
1987 2.9 v6 Ranger.
Emmisions Light is on.
What could be the cause?
Don't think it's the cat.,fuel pump or o2 sensor.

I'm not absolutely positive, but I don't think what you are seeing is a "Check Engine Light" as we know it today. As far as I know, Ford didn't use the CEL until 1988.
In any event, you can pull the codes whether or not your friend's Ranger has the standard CEL. This article describes how to do it both ways:
