Found a sweet E350 shuttle bus to tow my trailer. 1996 model with a Power Stroke, AIC, rear air, dual rear wheels, etc., etc.
Anyway, just driving around, it's great. But I think that I've got some pretty short gears in the back. Will be great for towing, but I'd like to hear what someone might think they may be.
At 2000 RPM's on the AIC, I'm just above 58MPH. Hauler has 225/75R16 tires. Do I have 4.65's?
Any simple mod's I should do? I'm new to the diesel, and I have a good shop to work with that is familiar with diesels.
Dave- it's early, so my math might be a little shaky, but it sounds like you have 4.10 gearing. I got to playing with numbers, and was going to suggest that a cheap and easy way to reduce the rpm's is taller tires. (That's what I did with my truck- by going to 35" tires, I'm going 69mph @ 2000 rpm.) I was also going to tell you that you would see about a 20% reduction in rpm by going to 35's, for example, when I realized that the numbers are the same for my truck, so you must have 4.10's. To be absolutely sure, there is supposed to be a tag on the rear end itself that will be a little cryptic, but should be decipherable.
If 35's seem a little too big to you, you can get a 12% reduction in rpm's by going to 33's, and 6% by going to 31's. With 33's, you'd be going about 65; with 31's you be going a little over 61.
I hope this helps.
Don't think I want bigger tires though. The little girl is almost nine feet tall, so I'd like to keep her near the ground. I'll do some checking on the tags.
