Planning on getting my exhaust rebuilt for my 1970 Bronco. It has a rebuilt 302 V8. Was wondering if anyone has had this done and what they were charged. I plan to have the manifolds replaced with Hooker Headers and dual Flowmaster 40 mufflers. Getting it done at a local speed shop. Was quoted around $1000. Any ideas?
For that price don't buy the Hooker. Buy the L&L or Thorley headers they come with very thick mounting flanges(3/8-7/16) and may still offer a lifetime warrenty. $1000 is a little high. I had a custom bent 2 into one with a magnaflow installed for $200. I did buy L&L headers and installed them myself($365). I was fun driving to the muffler shop. I can see paying more than $800 to have the job done with the expensive headers. Your average hookers are cheap and are about $150. Don't get ripped off make sure you get what they tell you your getting.
a good amount ($300) was for labor involved in the removal of the existing manifolds...they said they lose bolts all the time and it could take some time to get the old ones off...basically the quote was
$200 hooker headers
$300 labor for headers/manifolds (could go down if they have no trouble, or so they say?!)
$600 for piping/dual flowmasters and labor
I don't know what the cost for the headers would be but I had the same thing done to my 74, ran the exaust strait from the manifold, and put 40 series flowmaster on, everything labor included cost me 400, I plan on installing the hooker headers also and I had that estimated at 200.
Cash
Do the headers yourself or get a friend to help you. It will save you money, and it is not that tough. Duals (header flanges back) with plain mufflers cost me about $300 parts and labor at a good shop, add another $150 or so for the flowmasters.
Yeah, I thought of doing it myself, but the idea that I might have a sheared bolt worries me. What's involved in the job? I heard you have to disengage the tranny, etc.
BTW, how would you rate Cragar Headers? Seen a few for less expensive but never seen much about them...thx.
Spray all the manifold bolts with a good penetrating oil (knocker loose, wd-40, etc.) and let soak a couple of times. If you can, start the engine to warm up the heads and manifold a little (a couple minutes or so). with the engine off start to remove the manifold bolts. Be careful the manifolds will be warm don't burn youself. Remove the exauhst pipe flange bolts first, but try to loosen all the bolts a little. If they are stubborn use more penetrating oil. you shouldn't have much trouble. You might need to relocate the starter wire to clear the headers and remove the clutch ajustment arm to put the headers in. Get a good set of header bolts.
A thousand dollars seems awful high...but then again anyone who has ever broken a exhaust bolt knows how much trouble that can be to get it fixed. Check around to a number of muffler shops as labor pricing can vary by quite a bit depending on the shop.
One other area that is often overlooked is a high school or college automotive class. They may be able to install the headers for you as a class project if your not in a hurry. Then take your Bronco to the muffler shop to have the duals put on.
I had my duals bent to the exhaust manifolds with 2 1/4 inch flowmasters and out the back corners. It cost around 400 dollars...but then I had to adapt to hedman headers later. I got them from wild horses and they came with the header bolts collectors that I ended up not using, and all gaskets. Adapting them to the rest of the exhaust wasn't too difficult and the headers themselves installed easily. I haven't had any clearance problems, either...but I have an automatic. It currently sounds pretty quiet, but very cool. Very sleeperish.
i put the headman headers on mine, $170, then took to the local muffler shop and had turbo mufflers and 2 1/2" exhaust out the back for $200. yea i did the headers myself but that sounds a little high to me?
