Just in case...if I ever have a plug blow out of our soon to be delivered F550 V10 I plan on doing all ten plug holes with timeserts. I would like to remove the heads and do them on the bench so they are perfect.
I've a good mechanic...but never worked on a modular V10. I know removing the heads can be a chore on any engine while in the vehicle. I also know the V10 heads could be much worse. But I'd rather have alot of work with the end result of knowing you did a job right than try and timesert all 10 plugs while the heads are on the engine and never know if they are installed properly or have shavings get in the threads or cylinder.
Or...is doing the timesert while the heads are on the engine less trouble than I think. I suppose if you removed all the coil packs, injection lines etc you would have a better shot. But its that "working in the dark" feeling I get since you'll never see what you have done. Time Sert shows their installs on a bench...so I know the actual job will be much different.
Is head removal and replacement a terrible job that involves many gaskets having to be perfect or you'll have a leak...and all that good stuff. I dont want to fix the plugs and end up with an equally bad problem. I would imagine timing of the cams would be an important issue too.
The question is whether Ford will void your warranty if you remove the head and/or do the Time Sert when there isn't a problem. Just throwing out a what if. I'd imagine removing the head would make doing all 10 easier but the removal and reinstallation may not be too fun. I've never done it but I'm making an educated guess.
Well I wouldn't do a time sert at all if we never have a problem. But warranty or not...if one goes they are all getting done. I'm the type to fix the problem completely and properly and throw warranty to the wind. I've never had luck with warranties anyway...I once drove a new Chevy truck for 36000 miles and they could not fix the problem. At 36,001 they magically found the problem and said a cylinder head needed replaced. Thats what I get with warranties. For 36,000 miles I got about 2 gallons of Sea Foam and/or carbon remover. Cant go there right now.
I'm assuming I'll never see a blown plug. But if I do I will fix it properly. And if possible...I'll deal with Ford and have them do the head R/R and while they are off I'll do the time serts. They are good folks and I bet they would work out a partial deal with our special request.
Just thinking about the task of R/R'ing cylinder heads on a V10
