73-76 had gas caps
77-79 had gas doors
some or all 73 had 68-72 taillights.
some beds may have the mounting holes wider or narrower a part.
69-72 are very different.
"My truck is a SWB, regular cab. Is an extended cab shortbed the same box?" yes.
Well said ,also the top edge of the bedside is flat you could lay a drink cup
on the flat side (73-79) and the older ones the same area is sloped at about
45° ,also I came across a stepside bed that had the inter rear fenderwells in the
bedside that bolted in most others ive saw were made to the bedside. might
be something to look for if you have tire to bed issues they seem wider than the
others and if there not wide enough you could unbolt them and band them
wider!
Been a major fan of the 73-79 style since I was 15 or so. First truck was a 78 SB and still have it and looking to "build a bed" for it. I have 2 good outer bedsides for it, but wanting to put them on another bed, pre 77 that has good inner bedsides, floor etc. I thought the main difference in 73-76 vs 77-79 was the outer left bedside only. If I'm reading this thread correctly the actual bolt pattern can be different? Any explaination/ clarification is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
you got it.. if in doubt, a quick check of the frame will tell you everything. it will either spread out behind the cab a few inches or, in the case of a highboy, it will not.
The ladder frame they use stays the same width front to back.
