Steering column?

I have a 72 sport custom with an auto. Can I take the tilt column out of a newer truck say a 78 or 79 and put it in my 72.
How much work would be involved or would the column be pretty much a bolt on??

wiring is differant, but can be adapted. will mount right in where the old one was, only problem is the later columns are about 2 inches longer on the upper end. makes a tight fit behind the wheel for some of us.

I also don't like the plastic housing on the '78 and later. Looks ok on those yrs., but trying to adapt it to the earlier style is a PITA. '77 and earlier have the same column design and that's what I'd use (in fact, I'm looking for one now).

If the truck has power steering you could go with a pre-78 column and put on a smaller aftermarket wheel.

I am wanting to add power steering, and i figured if I'm gonna change the column any way why not go with tilt? was just wondering which column I should go with.
