I've heard that injector pumps should be replaced around 100k miles. I've got 169k on '93 F350 dually 7.3L non-turbo. Runs and starts fine. Priced an injector pump, he bought out what looked like a plain old fuel pump. Is this the injector pump, or is there more? I'm ignorant but capable.
Thanks.
What he showed you was what we called a "lift pump" looks like an automotive fuel pump. How much did he want for it? Your injection pump is rebuildable and it is cheaper to do it that way. If it is running fine, leave it alone until it craps out (it probably won't ever get to the point where it won't run at all so there is no need to worry that it will leave you stranded somewhere). When that happens just take it to a diesel shop that specializes in fuel systems and have them rebuild the pump (they can buy a kit for it similar to a carb rebuild kit).
Ok, thanks for the info. I figured as much. The price was around $15. It locates on the passenger side of the engine and takes fuel up to the filter, so what you're describing makes sense. I guess I'll shop for a rebuilder now so I'll know where to go when the time comes.
I had an '85 6.9 that all of a sudden started acting up on the freeway, I thaught it was bad fuel. It all of a sudden cleared up for two days then died. Bad injector pump. But you have to remember it had about 200,000 miles on it when it went. so don' go by the 100,000 mile "rule", fix it when it breaks.
