66 Mustang 289 V8 Eldelbrock carb and spacer
Car starts easy even without functioning electric choke (choke is wired open) and idles good. when u go to take off and give it a pretty good dodse of gas the car like dies and then picks up and goes. im assuming this carberation problem. i bought the car used and am not real sure what the carb ratings or model is but a friend told me that it was easy to adjust since the screw were outside. any ideas on how to adjust this thing? thanks
If it is stumbling on acceleration it usually has to do with an accelerator pump adjustment.
If you have a Holley look on the drivers side of the carb at the linkage. You should see an additional linkage that goes to the front of the carb and it actuates the accelerator pump arm that goes under the front bowl. This linkage has an adjustment screw. What you want is for the accel pump arm to start moving as soon as the throttle linkage starts. Adjust the screw for this.
The screws on the Edelbrock are for the Idle Circuit. Their adjustment is irrelavent in the power or cruise circuit. You have several adjustments on an Edelbrock. Primary metering rod, Primary Jet, Primary Spring, Secondary Jet, Acc. pump, and idle circuit. If you can find an old Carter AFB tuning manual, their instructions make more sense than the ones from Edelbrock. If not, go to Edelbrocks web site; they have their tuning manual online. If I had to guess, I would say that your problem is springs. If you floor the car from idle, and it boggs, It could be acc pump or springs. If you floor it from partial throttle, and it boggs, the springs are waiting too long to move the metering rod from cruise to power position. You may very well have too large carb on the 289 in the first place. It is my experience that a 500 is about perfect for a 289. A 600 is plenty big. I would not even think about getting bigger than 600.
