91 F-150 302 w/ AOD. I set my idle as low as it would let me. Idles at its lowest around 700 rpms. Often when I come out of drive or reverse the rpms kick up to 1500-2000. Often a kick to the gas will bring it down, but not always to the 700's, more often around 800. Even stopped(in drive) and driving it may idle in gear at 1,000 and jump to 2000 if I take it out of gear.
Not only is this annoying and embarrasing...it cant be good. Over the past month or so, the problem has been more frequent.
Any ideas what the problem is and how I can go about fixing it.
Thanks for the time.
Check the throttle body, and clean it - it sounds like the throttle plates might not be closing fully. It might also be a good time to see what codes are stored in the computer. Check out http://fordfuelinjection.com and click on "Getting Codes" if you've never done it before.
Thanks for the link. Thats a good start. Are there any pitfalls I need to watch for as I attempt not to ruin my throttle body? Do I need to lube any points in there, and if so what to use? Thanks again.
I would suspect a faulty IAC valve. It is what controls idle speed by letting air bypass the throttlebody. Sometimes cleaning works, but usually it's best to replace it.

Thankyou for the insights. The valves were quite varnished as well as the throttlebody. The IAC was more than cruded up and disgusting but cleaned up very well. Fixed it right quick.
