Anyone reload their own bullets for hunting? My dad drew an elk tag in Wyoming and I've never loaded for elk before. He is "renting" my 7mm Rem Mag from me for his trip.
I've got a box of 160gr Nosler AccuBonds
175gr Nosler Partitions
160gr Barnes Triple Shocks.
Anyone loaded any of these up ever? I have no experience with any of them, yet. Just thought I'd see what loads you guys had found worked good.
I have been reloading since 1984 or so. I have never used AccuBonds, but have shot some elk and deer tith Partitions and Barnes. Both work extremely well, with excellent weight retention. The Barnes TS is more accurate, but, not a big enough of a difference...only about 1/2 inch better at 100yards. That may be a world of difference for a bench shooter, but the elk will not care.
The barnes TS is said to develop less pressure, thus allowing for the possiblity of higher velocities.
As far as loads go, without knowing what kind of rifle you have, barrel length, etc., AND without knowing how much experience you have, I would suggest you pick a clean burning powder (maybe IMR4350), CCI250 primers and religiously follow the directions given in your book. Most folks are safe if they start at the lower end of the suggested loadings and work up in increments...watching for signs of excess pressure. There is good reason for this when trying new bullets as they may, even though weights are the same, produce different pressures.
Here is a link to a couple of sites which might offer more help.
I have been reloading for about 5 or 6 years now. The rifle I am loading for in a Browning A Bolt Composite Stalker (26" barrel). I have it topped with a Leupold VX II 3-9x40.
I have been religiously shooting Hornady SSTs on deer ever since they first came out in the 139gr. I usually load all my 7mm ammo with RL 22.
I load everything I shoot, my old Ruger M77 in 7mag likes
the Nosler 150gr bullets with 63gr of IMR 4831 behind it.
Been wanting to play with Hodgdon's H1000.
i have only reloading for a couple of years now but hunting big game for awhile. i have found that the swift a frames have some of the best knock down power for big game. the new swift scciroccos are sweet for long range take downs but you need around a 1 in 9 twist to keep them stable for longer range shots. the nosslers work pretty well and so do the sierras but there expensive.
You might try IMR 4350 too. In a 24"-26" barrel with that bullet the velocity should exceed 3000 fps with a max load. I bought a 25 pound can of the stuff back in the 70's (less than $4 per pound) and have used about 75% of it in all of my rifles, .284 Win., 7X57, .375 JRS and good results with all of them.
I just picked up some IMR 4350 a few weeks ago, kinda looking forward to trying it out. Been wanting to try it for some time, but my RL 22 has been giving me exceptional groups, its hard to change. Hopefully I'll get some time tomorrow to load up some of the Nosler Accubonds, those are a sweet new bullet.
I like the RL22 as well...nice groups, as you mentioned. 57 grains of IMR4350 should give you some consistent velocity. I have not loaded the 7mmRM with RL-22 yet. I use it and IMR4350 in my .300s and can't really tell the difference in any of thos guns.
Been reloading for years. I use Barnes x on heavy game. I does massive damage on elk in 7m ultra mag. I smashed through both shoulder blades and got exit wound on one last year. Never had a penetration failure from the X.
"Renting" my gun to my dad is kind of a joke between us. He has a 308 Win that he has killed 7 elk with, and he kinda wanted to use something bigger. So he asked if he could "rent" my 7mag from me as a joke, and I said sure. My scope I had on it wasn't all that great, so he said for letting him borrow my gun he'd buy me a new scope, which was that Leupold. He is getting all free ammo for the trip at least. And he will get a chance to harvest and elk with my rifle before I do
Don't know if any of the guys mentioned this, but with the 7MM and slow burning powders, you don't want to be too far below the minimum in a reloading book. There have been cases of "detonation" with load say 20% under minimum. Follow the reloading guides and start at the low end but not less than that.
The 7mm Rem Mag also seems to like magnum primers.
I have reloaded using Nosler Ballistic tips and 4831 with good results, but I don't have my log book with me to check the loads. I based my load on the Sierra reloader guide from the early 80s.
your making out like a bandit on that deal. those scopes aren't cheap. i prefer the zeisse scopes myself.
I have used Leupold and Zeiss. Night Force and Springfield Armory beat them both hands down and are a little cheaper. They also live a lot longer on my .338 Lapua.
i havent had good luck with the springfields and haven't tried the nightforce yet. i'm running a zeiss on my barret 50 cal and haven't had a problem yet.(knock on wood) i will admit though i have seen a couple of them come back in because the lens loosened up on high caliber rifles.
