the tech said the timing advance wasn't working like it should be. This is on a 1989 F250 I'm thinking about buying (159,000 miles). He said they could fix it, but the only thing I'd notice (or not notice in this case) is the puff of blue/white smoke at startup and "maybe a little bit of power gain". He did say the injectors were the originals. They sell new ones for $28.50 each, so I bought a set. He quoted $558 for the IP and $207 labor. Seemed high for what I might or might not gain. I told him the truck needed a new clutch because the pedal was at the floor. He said if it's not slipping (which it isn't), the clutch was probably good and needed to change a plastic/nylon bushing on the clutch mechanism where it links to the master cylinder pushrod. Does this sound about right? Thanks for your help.
i work in a diesel shop, and that price does seem kinda high, if the advance piston in the pump is not working right or is borderline its only a matter of time, you will feel a little bit more power and the smoke will go away, over all the truck will just run a lot smother, the price on the injectors sounds right but we sell exchange pumps for you truck at $410, or to go through a customers pump it usually runs around $450 parts and labor unless we do the install let me know what happens,
Thanks for the replies. I still haven't layed any cash out, but my neighbor and I replaced all the injectors and the little plastic bushing ($8, from the dealer, of course). It seems to have more pep and the clutch isn't all the way to the floor. The bushings on the clutch cross-over shaft (or whatever it's called) are worn, too. But all in all, it's a lot better than it was. We've agreed on $3k for an '89 F250 XLT Lariat Extended cab, long bed, bed liner (over the rails), camper shell, 5sp ZR, 3.55 rear end. So even if I have to shell out some more cash for a clutch, I think I'm going to come out pretty good.
Thanks again and I'll try not to ask too many repeat questions.
