My neighbor was telling me that he once flew a kite to 1500 feet high. The air traffic control people came around and told him to bring it down. Anyone here ever fly kites ? I still do. Everyone loves a kite.
Unless this kite had an area of over 100^3 (square) feet and was made of metal I really doubt that anyone from any airport told him to take the kite down. Radar passes threw paper perty damn easilly There isn't an airport in the nation with a radar strong enough to pick up a thin sheet of plastic or paper flying at 1500' without frying a few birds that got in the radars waves pass.
I have a few stunt kites I get out from time to time. I love watching the dog try and catch them. The daughter is now getting to the point where she wants to fly my kites and it is hard for me to watch $100.00 + $ crash into the ground.
I know. They are sure expensive and built like junk. Another thing I like to do is tie 200' of florescent pink flagging tape to each end of the kite and one in the middle. It sure look majestic flying 500' high with the 3 - 200' tails.
I flew one last summer, and I'm looking foward to it again this summer. I found a solution to bringing the kite back down once you get it up. My co-worker told me they used to use fishing poles for the string. I gave it a little thought, and I pulled out the CORDLESS DRILL. Works very well for bringing your kite back down.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-May-02 AT 07:41 PM (EST)]Wow! It's been years since I flown a kite. My youngest daughter likes to fly them though. Back when I was a boy my best friend and I would fly all the time. And when the wind wasn't blowin' and we'd get bored my best friend and I would get at opposite ends of the street, kites on the ground behind 30 ft. of string or so. Then one of us would say go and we would run toward each other. The kites would lift off and after we passed each other, we'd turn to see our kites and we would try to take to each others kite down by trying to get ours underneath the other's and pull, to rip the opponets kite wide open while trying to dodge and not get hit. We'd pass, go to the opposite end and turn and go again. Kind of like kite jousting. The kite still able to fly or had the less damage was the winner. Loser would buy the kites for the next match. Great fun. What a time we had. Thanks for the memories.
