I was driving tonight.. flat, dry road.. at about 25 mph.. all of a sudden my 2001 Expedition (with only 26,000 miles on it) instantly (as I was moving) became extremely sluggish and was roaring real deep. I noticed the 4x4 light came on too. I had not turned it on (or accidently bumped the switch).. I pulled over to the side of the road.. turned off the car.. turned back on.. flipped the 4x4 switch on and off.. seemed to drive (somewhat) more normal.. but still seems to be shifting a little sluggish (as if it's still slighly engaged). I immediately brought it to my Ford dealer's nite drop box.. it's still under warranty.. but my fear is (since it's pretty much back to normal).. that there's nothing they can do. Any thoughts or related experiences? Thanks..
Sounds like it went into 4L for some reason, although these trucks are not supposed to engage 4L unless the vehicle is going less than 5 mph and the tranny is in neutral. You can shift into 4H at any speed but shouldn't experience the sensation you describe. It's good that you have it at the dealership to at least document the problem even if they can't duplicate, because it's sure to happen again.
As a follow up.. heard back from the dealer today.. ready for pick up! I was shocked to hear back so fast (especially without having an appointment). Kudos to my dealership. Turned out to be the Gem Module. Apparently this module regulates the transmission/4x4 system.?!?.? Anyway.. driving like new again!
