Which chip

Gentlemen,

I know I'm getting ahead of myself cause my truck is still on order and is not scheduled to arrive for another 3 to 5 weeks. But I've been reading postings for several weeks on the benifits of chips. I plan to use my truck as an all around vehicle, vacations, hunting trips, and if I can fit it in the parking garage at work I'll drive it every day. I really don't plan to pull anything right now, although the group I hunt with and I own a 30 ft trailer which we don't plan to re-locate. What I'd like is to bump up the HP above 300 without drastic modifications to the exaust system. And if I have to move that trailer some day I can without concerns of overheating anything. I guess what I'm asking is, help me choose a chip. Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Magnum1029

The Superchips Microtuner is the way to go. I don't recommend a chip for the Powerstroke unless you have a special need (tire size change, etc).

I will chime in and tell you what I am doing and how it works for me. I use the Turbo Chip from Western Diesel Systems. It raises the hp to 315 and the lbs./ft. of torque to 625. The chip is designed by diesel engine specialists, specifically for the Powerstroke. It has safe EGTs, builds power smoothly and consistently, increased my fuel mileage, improved transmission performance and shift points, raises speed limiter and is simple to install. It can be removed in minutes if you need to go to Ford. I am extremely pleased with this 65 hp chip and is all that I need. They also have a 3 position chip that can take you to 354 hp and 774 lbs./ft. of torque. With this one you will need to change to a larger exhaust system to properly remove the additional heat. Western Diesel also has their Turbo Flow Stainless Steel Exhaust System that compliments the 3 position chip along with Ram Air Intake, you are looking at a really nice set up if you need that much power.

Good luck.

I use the Superchips Microtuner. Can't say enough good things about it. Easy to program, just like connecting a key board to a computer. You can even do it from inside the cab sitting in the drivers seat on a rainy day. Takes 3-4 minutes and your off and running. I saw an amazaing improvement in HP and Torque, transmission shifts like a dream, and got 3.5 miles per gallon increase. Plus you get TWO programs, one at 60HP and 115ft lbs, the other at 80HP and 130ft lbs over stock. I am one happy camper!!

Thanks for the advice guys but I have a couple of more questions?
Is the Microtuner a device that is used to reconfigure the board that the vehicle currently has? Or does it come with a chip that replaces the one the vehicle has? Additionally, If the dealer changes the configuration back to the factory original settings, can I then use the Microtuner to program the chip back to the way I had it?
I hate to sound skeptical but I'd like to hear of some of the down sides to using the Microtuner.

Though I don't have a SCMT, I have been doing considerable reading about it. I believe you "store" the data currently in your stock truck in the unit, and download the "improved" data into the truck. If/when you need to take your truck into the dealer, you reverse the process and re-install the stock program before service, and re-install the "improved" data afterwards.

Yes, it reprograms the stock chip in the truck. The tuner downloads and saves the stock program within itself and you would simply return the program to stock before you take it in for service, then when you get it back even before you drive it off the lot you can easly reprogram the chip to either of the two preformance programs. I'm telling ya, this is as easy as 1, 2, 3. The down side? I'd have to say it would be if you forgot to retune the chip before service and Ford flashed it, then your tuner would no longer work. However I believe Superchips would reset it for a minimal cost. Another thing that I would say is not necessarily a down side, but if you program the higher of the two programs you will also need to put on a larger exhaust and pyro gauge. But I believe you would need to do this with any higher preformance chip, not just the microtuner. This is not necessay with the lower setting. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Yes.

Before taking it to the dealer, you plug in the tuner and reprogram the truck to stock.

It has all the advantages of the Superchips diesel chip and none of the installation disadvantages plus you get 2 programs for the price of one. The reason why it has all the advantages is because is uses the same programs as the chips except its programmed into your computer rather than being on a board that overrides it.

Thanks for the replies guys,

This question is for Ken,

What is this I hear that after using the Microtuner some of the readings from your overhead console become inaccurate (mpg, etc)
Have you heard anything about this? Thanks, Magnum1029

Do you plan to obtain a list anytime soon. I'd sure like to purchase a Microtuner but I'd hate to lose the functionality of the console?
