I have a 2.3 standard shift ranger, and it pings also really bad. How do you get the MAF sensor out of vent hose? and I would like to know the best plugs to use. They sure make them hard to reach. Thanks Paco1945
idon't know about the MAF, but IMO the best plugs to use are Motorcraft or Autolite Double Platinums. Motorcraft is in the process of replacing the DPs with "fine metal" platinum plugs, so you might find those available, as well.
I assume you are having trouble getting the MAF out because of the security torx screws used. If you look around at tool suppliers, especially ones that sell automotive tools, you should find a set. I'd discourage it, but you could try using a dremmel to grind out the center part of the screw which is providing the "security" feature.
Re & Re MAF sensor:
Disconnect the electrical connecter from the MAF sensor.
Remove the air cleaner outlet tube assembly.
Remove the MAF sensor retaining bolts and lift the MAF sensor out.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
One of the security torx's can be taken out with a pair of needle nose vise grips. I used a very small drill bit to drill out the center nub on the other just enough to where my regular torx driver would grab it. Replaced them with some phillips head screws.
Have we figured out yet what year 4-banger we're all talking about?
Which leads me to the next question, are all the 2.3L MAF setups the same throughout the years? And, is the 2.3L MAF setup the same as the other (3.0L, 4.0L) Ranger engines?
