wiring prob (starting prob)

aright guys.. im stumped. PROBLEM: the truck started and ran fine last week. yesterday i got in the truck turned the key and all i hear is a electrical grinding noise (i suspect the solenoid is making this noise however it is bran spanking new) i replaced the voltage regulator today still w/ no avail. ive got the wiring schematics on cd and ive been trying to trace down where i should be looking for a bad connection. however ive got a few mystery wires under there connected to the possative terminal on the solenoid (one yellow connected to a wiring harness, one black w/ 2 could b white, could b light blue stripes going straight to the firewall and under the dash to a wiring harness). hoping someone could clarify what im looking at or where to look next. also. this is a project truck still being put together; the instrument cluster is dissconnected (again the truck ran fine the other day in the same condition its in right now minus the new voltage regulator) if theres anything i left out just ask

I just had a similar problem. Check the positive wire to the starter and make shure it is not touching a gound and shorting out. I don't know how long I was driving like this before it finally gave out but I suspect it was a while. I fixed the short and the whole thing ran alot better don't ask me how?!

Check to make sure your starter's bolts have not loosen up and the starter is engaging the flywheel correctly. Then make sure the the transmission and transfer case bolts are tight. It is possible to have the starter/transmission/transfer case to come loose and provide a no start because something is angle or canted.

Been there, done that.

just got home from work, i have a dinner to go to tonight, i will try checking the connection at the starter tomarrow. also i forgot to add i had the battery checked while i was at the auto parts store and its in great condition. again this is deffinetly a electrical prob. the grinding noise im talking about is the sound the solenoid makes when there isnt enough amperage to close the cercuit. does anyone know what these mystery wires are?

It could be just a junky solenoid. When the solenoid growls like that it's not getting enough power or it's dead inside.

What happens when you short across the solenoid?

I had the same problem with a Chebbey this spring. I did a thorough cleaning of the battery cables, and replaced one that was half/a$$ bad and it works great now. It might be that simple for you too. This truck worked fine one day, the next day it acted how you describe yours.

I had a similar problem, it turns out my battery was dead. Just for kicks, try jumpstarting it. My solenoid was making a similar noise. I replaced the solenoid and same thing. I asked here at FTE and the suggestion to jump the battery worked! It's certainly worth a shot and can't hurt at this point. Let us know..

I bet your starter's stuck. Bang on it and try again.

try to identify ehre the growl is coming from either the solenoid or the starter. if no help is available to crank the truck just use an old screwdriver to short across the solenoid. if the solenoid is engaging and the growl is from the starter, then id pull the starrter and have it tested. if ti is coming fro the solenoid replace or clean you battery cables. if you have a volt-meter test the voltage out put on the starter side of the solenoid when you are cranking if the solenoid engages but isnt sending full battery voltage then you may have a bad solenoid. just remember one thing new parts aernt always good parts.

aright guys, i had the starter bench tested today. seems shes at the end of her days. not even so much as a sputter out of her. ill have the new one in by tonight hopefully. this should cure the prob w/ starting but im still curious as to what those wires are. especially the black one w/ the light blue or white stripes. again it goes from the battery side of the solenoid to the firewall and then under the dash to a factory wiring harness. thanks to all who helped and gave suggestions.

well good luck with the starter, i just peeked under my hood i have 2 factory wires and then the batt cable the yellow one im assuming is the main power wire for everything in the cab and the other is a blue or black wire which goes to the alternator. hope it helps.
