A/C and heater issues

I have a 1997 F150 4x4 with 237,000 miles on it. My A/C, vent, heat system is acting up. If the dash switch is in any position other than off, the system will switch back and forth to the defrost function. Example, if the switch is in the panel mode the system will work fine one minute and the next minute the air will be blowing throught the defrost ports. It just started this recently. Should I just replace the switch or something more? Thanks for any assistance with this issue. David

I seem to remember a thread addressing a fix for a door in the ac/heating system.
Sorry not more specific, but sounds like it may have something to do with that.

Ac-heater

i had a '97 with the same problem...there is a "blendor door" way up behind the dash, that controls where the air comes out--vents, or defrost etc. and required most of the dash to be removed to change...cost me close to $1000.00 (Canadian). It worked fine after changing, except on hot days while towing. All of the AC kept switching to the defroster only. They never could figger out why. Finally jacked up the keys and sold the truck!

Air distribution is NOT controlled by blend door function. The blend door is controlled by an electonic actuator. All other doors are controlled by vacuum. You have a vacuum leak and it could be in a hose, vacuum canister or any one of the actuators or the switch itself.
