85 302

Hello I am able to pickup a 85 302 out of a f150. it needs rebuilt butit is free. I was wondering if this is a good core to start with for a peformance build or would i be better off with a mustang motor? Just dont know if there are any difference in crank rods block ect... Thanks Brian

First off Bian, welcome aboard.

Secondly, what are your plans for hte motor? I believe you will be safe with the free motor, but you may want to have it inspeted by your local machine shop before you dump any cash into it. A free motor is a free motor

Hi and Thanks for the welcome. The motor will be going in a small, pretty light 4wd it will be driven most of the time on the road with some weekend mud runs and light offroading. It will have a 4sp tranny (t18).Looking for some decent horsepower and torque but still be pretty reliable. Probably stick with a carb instead of fuel injection. Need to know if the 302 out of a 85 f150 will be be a good starting point. What i am trying to get at is if you were going to build a 302 what would be your choice for the block and crank. Are there any differences say in a mustang block and crank as opposed to the block and crank that came out of a f150

yes there is a difference in blocks. The 85 302ho in stangs were roller setups. The 302 in trucks were nothing special. The roller setup would cost more for the cam and lifters but it makes more power. The 1985 stang also had a aluminum intake and shortie headers from the factory. Pre 85 302 ho where non-roller and 1986 stang was fuel injection.
