What year were seatbelts first mandatory in trucks? Didnt know if this was the right forum or not, but I figured since I have 5 of these this is where I would put it, LOL
all my 1976s have the shoulder belts, might have been mid-year, or plant specific. my 76s are from san jose, and ontario. my regular cabs have the dual system with a retractor on the floor and the side panel, and my crewcab has the single retractor on the B pillar, with a solid connection on the floor. (so does my 79 regular cab)
It's been a lot of years, but I don't remember my 78 F150 having shoulder belts. Ithought there was a GVW cutoff for that just like there was with thepollution equipment. My 78 had no cat.
Yeah, there was a GVW cutoff. I drove an 84 F-600 that had lap belts only. There was also an 88 L-8000 that was only lap belts too. My 69 has lap belts only.
I believe for cars it was 1962...lap belts in the front only. For trucks, I don't know. I believe Ford offered belts, padded dash and visors, and deep steering wheel in the cars as an option in '56, but not everybody ordered them
My '55 Ford Fairlane had no belts. I did install them soon after I purchased it.
I was recently talking to an aquaintence, who has several '55, '56' '57 Chevies. When he got insurance from a well known company, they told him to remove the aftermarket seat belts from the '55, because the car didn't have them as original equipment.
The reason was, that if someone used the belts, there would be an indication they would be safer in an accident. Most aftermarket belts are installed thru the floorpan with big washers, and the floor is not designed for the forces that would be applied under certain circumstances. Thus he could be sued.
My dad had them put in the front of our 55 Ford Fairlane. Traded for a new 61 and had front and rears installed at the dealer before he took delivery.
The dealers used to do that. The guy that bought my '65 Cutlass new, had the dealer install rear belts when he took delivery of the car. He traded the dealer the wire wheel hubcaps for a set of dog dishes plus the install.
