2V vs. 3V

As I read the specs on the '04 F150 3V Alum Head 5.4l and the '04 Expy 2V Cast Head 5.4l, I see the HP and TQ difference as follows:
3V - 300HP@5000 and 365TQ@3750
2V - 260HP@4500 and 350TQ@2500

Cocnerns:
1. Is additional 40HP really that much at the cost of higher revs and much closer to redline.
2. 15FtLbs of TQ at higher rpm seems like little gain.

Am I missing something?
Maybe if the TQ drops off quickly in the 2V and find yourself with no umpf....
Which numbers are more compatible to towing versus cruising?
Anyone have a link to the HP and TQ curves?

As you're implying, review of the torque and HP curves is key. The max output numbers don't tell you what percentage of max torque is available at 1,500 - 3,000 RPM, which will tell the story.

The primary advantage to the 3v heads is in breathing, so it wouldn't increase the torque much, but it does allow the engine to maintain torque to a higher RPM. As you may know, an engine will develop more horsepower just by increasing RPM's IF it can maintain its torque output (or even if the torque falls slower than the RPM's rise).

Because it has used the same or similar heads as the 4.6, the 5.4 (with almost 20% larger displacement) has been somewhat choked at high RPM's. That's why the GM engines have shown more horsepower.

I think you'll find the 3v heads are a big improvement.

It's all about HP in the TV and print ads even though big HP and torque at high RPM is worthless in a truck.

I believe the 3v has more torque at all RPMs than the old 2v, and it hods it to a higher RPM to make for better passing on the freeway.

All I know is that Ford better do something. I drove a 2004 Tahoe with a 5.3 recently. Definitely feels stronger than a 5.4 Expy, particularly since Ford porked-up the 2003+ models with an additional 300 lbs. over comparable 2002 models. I don't even want to compare the Tahoe to my 4.6

Don't know. It was a Tahoe LT with the 5.3. I do know that it was the standard ratio, not an optional one. Tahoe's lighter than the Expy, which is a contributing factor in acceleration capabilities.

I've got a Sequoia with the little 240HP 4.7L that will smoke my and I'm sure any "stock" Expy out there. It came standard with a 4.10:1 rearend.

I still prefer my Expy for its rugged looks and durability.

"The 5.4L 3-valve V8 delivers 300HP and 365ft/ls. of torque, delivering 80% of the torque at 1000 RPM, providing unparalleled towing capability." in the F150....

Thanks FTE
