Not spumoni...although that too does look delicious...
Like Luigi's italian ice...I was in Jersey last year but never tried it...I just realized last night they had it in my local store and tried it...and love it...
Coming from Chicago, I grew up with the stuff. Italian Ice, or Italian Lemonaid...as it was called, was sold out of Italian Lemonaid stands. Lemon was the only flavor that I ever saw. Lemon is still my favorite. With the 'real' stuff from the stands, you'd sometimes get a few seeds in it. Brings back good summer memories.
Around here (Philly area), we call it "water ice". My grandfather used to make it occasionally.
Yeah, it ain't no snow cone.
There is a fairly large chain around, Rita's, which makes a decent product for being a large corporation. There are also many independent shops. I'm pretty sure it's that way in NYC as well.
Also works well at parties for making "italian margaritas" (I just invented that name).

Im originally fron NYC, I never heard of "water ice" until i started venturing into south jersey and Pennsy. Up North it is always known as Italian Ice, it tends to be a little creamier than "water Ice" Rita's is ok. If your are in North or central NJ try Ralph's ices, blows Rita's away.
i can't believe italian ice isn't everywhere...i guess it's something i take for granted growing up on the jersey shore...if you come across mango...try it
