Ooops, I waited till 5000 miles like the manual said before the first change.
Why do you recommend 500? What about 3k for the interval, again the book says 5k?

Change it at 500 miles to flush out all the trash that forms during the engines 'break-in' period. Once you hit 3000 miles, change again, and follow the 3 month/3000 mile change.
I've always followed the 'Severe Service' maintainence schedule (which says oil at 3000 miles), rather than the regular schedule (every 5000 miles). If my truck was strictly a highway rig, I'd stick to the 5000 mile changes, but with all the city & off-road driving I do, I'm sticking to the 3000!
