Are they really that important?

I've been noticing that some of the signatures are really getting huge. I was curious to know if everyone who uses a large signature is aware of the space required to store all of it? This site has picture galleries, profiles, and such to house all of that information without posting pictures of their trucks and listing everything they have done to it in every reply.
I belive posting a link to the profile or gallery would be more appropriate.
Just a curiosity type question.

I got to agree that some of the signatures are getting a little too long and take up a lot of space. Sometimes it seems as if a single post will take almost my entire screen. I use my signature so that when I visit various forums and answer a question it shows that I have experience with that vehicle. I admit that my signature isn't the shortest around, but I chose not to use anything besides basic text, no colors, moving pictures, or even still pictures. I don't mind the small picture that some add, but sometimes they get carried away with very long signatures and various things. I understand that all truck owners are proud of their toys, but it is true, there are user galleries for showing off your pride and joy. If one wants to add a pic, it should be Ford truck related, and nothing else. I have not written this with anybody in particular, so please, nobody take any offense to any of this. But some of the signatures of gotten out of hand.

I agree. It appears as though some people have the need to be higher profile then others.I've wondered if this and the photos put more of a demand on the FTE computer setup.

I think that's a question well put. As you can see, I have tightened up my own a little bit.

There's a limit to what a signature can do, and I believe that now the novelty has worn off it is best (as in most expressive) to maintain a certain amount of brevity.

Mark Twain said it best: "Eschew Surplussage."

When I boiled mine down, I really wanted to promote the tennessee forum- and it is necessary for a moderator stamp to be there.

But I may burn the second gif eventually because I already have an icon.

I think the signature lines are dynamically inserted into the web-page as it is served up to your computer. Meaning, the web-page stored on the server does not have everyones sig in it... rather a reference to your sig.

The reason I think this (and I could be wrong), is I was making fun of a guy's signature in another post. Well, the next day his signature was dramatically changed. All without editing his post. I'm sure he just changed his profile. All of his previous posts reflected the updated sig.

In other words, I don't think it loads down the server too much.

But, I do agree that people get carried away with them... and have less of a meaning because of it.

The art and craft of a signature, is that it should be succinct, and say a lot with very little. Sort of like the target of a Haiku...

The best authors, and designers use this principle - "Eloquence in Simplicity", and that is something I myself have learned to appreciate very much.

And yes, the server calls it up, but I have noticed that a thread needs to have the new signature introduced in a post on it sometimes in order to have an affect on the previous postings.

As of this post, for example, the #2 image on mine should now link to the site rules instead of my own page here. That was something I was intending to eventually do but didn't quite get to before due to my outrageous slothfulness....

To sum things up: What makes a good painting great is what the artist takes out of it. Not what they put in.
