this is the third summer i have owned my truck, and every year my a/c does not work well and every year i have taken it in under warr. and after the dealer has worked on it, it will work all summer just fine. the dealer has replaced an o-ring here and a relay there but i always have the same problem, it works pretty good at idle but when you start going it does not stay cold. i have checked the pressure on the low side, right at 24 psi...should i try more coolant, or less any ideas would be great. the 3 year 36000 mile warr is up
a little more info, the a/c clutch will stay engaged when at idle but when i have someone run the rpm's up to 1500 it cycles on and off...i am guessing it is still a little low, i added some 134 to it a couple weeks ago
Some 1999-2004 Super Duty F-series And 2000-2004 Excursion Vehicles May
Exhibit A Lack Of A/c Cooling At Highway Speeds. This May Be Caused By Rapid
Cycling Of The A/c Compressor Clutch Due To Low Suction Pressures. To
Service, Evacuate And Recharge A/c System With:
- 56 Oz (1.59 Kg) Of R134a On Vehicles Without Auxiliary Air.
- 64 Oz (1.81 Kg) Of R134a On Vehicles With Auxiliary Air (excursion Only).
You guy's could do a check in the forum about installing a shutoff valve in the heater core hose to not allow hot antifreeze to pump in to the core when the AC is running or the temp *** is turned off. I think some company made a kit specially for S/D's. Most of the vehicle's I've had including my 77 F-250 have one that uses vacume to shut when the temp *** is set to cold. I read somewhere that Ford never put these on S/D's and some people were complaining about poor A/C performance in extreme temps. My 99 doesn't have a valve either but I live in WI where the heat isn't so terrible in the summer months. I do notice that it will still blow hot air when I just have the vent on with the *** set too cold even when the temps aren't that bad out. Just a thought
my 99 does the same thing, blows cold at low speeds but not at highway speeds...........what gives?
went and got a 12 oz can of 134 and put it in last night it seams to be better. before i put it in at idle the compresor clutch woud stay engaged but i had my wife sit in the truck and run it at 1500-2000 rpm it would cycle on and off. so i added refer. until the clutch stopped cycling on and off. its seams better but i have not had it on the road for any amount of time yet.
Gentlemen,
I have the same problem in a 2002 F250 CC and I live in central GA. Just two weekends ago, pulling the boat from the lake, the Mrs. says, and I'm paraphrasing, "Gee, the A/C really sucks". Although at a stop light at idle, it seems to get cold, relatively speaking. And I have experienced the same thing with the vent at full cold: warm air every time. I've searched the net for a fix to this but no joy. I know that some 50 lbs gear-head out there is saying, "Rookie...OK, first take some 40 Weight and ball bearings...its all about ball bearings..."
I was putting my hood blanket on my 04 SD KR (build date 19 Apr) when I remembered I had read this posting the other night about A/Cs not cooling. Just to the side of the turbo was a heater valve, the reason I noticed it, the valve was tied up with a wire tie to keep it off the engine. Not sure if this is Fords fix but today when I drove it to get my hood blanket!!!! $84.00 it cooled very well outside temp was 82.
