I bought a 99 F-350 with a PSD and no owners manual. Everyone tells me 14 quarts, but with 14 in it reads a quart and a half low. Also, does the 99 have the 2 quarts that stay in the engine to run the injectors, and if so will changing the oil on a hill have any effect on how much stays in there? All for now, thanx,
Hello
seems that I read somewhere that apx. 3 qts. are left in the engine.
Two qts in the rails and one in the oil cooler? (I think).
I don't know if draining on a hill will get the ballance out.
I wouldn't since the injectors need that oil to fire. could be a extra drain on electrical system / starter.
I have a 2001 psd and it holds 15 qts. with filter change, without filter change apx. two qts less.
I have heard older models don't hold as much. If you put 14 qts in, and its not up to full on the dip stick then I could assume that yours holds 15 qts. Unless you drain on a hill and in fact additional oil did came out.
This is my first diesel so I am just learning but I think this is correct. If not someone will be along to tell us so.
My early 99 is on the "full" mark when 15qts are added. I prefill the filter before putting it on then dump about 13qts in the engine. I then drive it to the auto parts store to dispose of the old oil. When I get home I let it sit for 1/2 hour then check the dipstick. It's on full everytime. Trying to get the oil out of the HP pump and pressure rails is a serious waste of time.
Outstanding! I wasnt trying to get the extra 2 quarts out though, I was just trying to figure out why it was reading low. If you guys say 15, then 15 it is. I did put in the 15th quart and it's just like you said Les, right on the full mark. Thanks for the help fellas!
