I have a code 18 on my 87 ranger[ 2.9 auto 4x4] it is in the continuous memory and it keeps coming back where do I start my book says it has to do with no tach signal to ecm or eratic idm,ecm or spout circuit failure.

The most likely cause is a wiring problem in the ignition, spout, PIP, IDM or ground curcuits. You will need to run the pinpoint test to determine the exact cause but you should check the TFI, coil, pulgs, wires, cap/rotor and PIP too. I can email you the pinpoint test if you need it.

Don't know much about your year but the pickup coil is a likely candidate. If it runs but still runs rough, it would be my best guess for stricly mechanical.

You need to enable your email, no one can get it unless you reply to them.

Did you check out the link I have in the tech info thread on the TFI system, that might help too.
