Awking, I think you need to eliminate the convertor first as the source of imbalance. This is gonna be a drag, but I can't think of any other way than to slip the tranny back and yank the convertor then bolt it up and start it without it. The convertor will slip back on the input shaft just enough to clear the flex-plate, but if it slips back into the plate while it's spinning it's gonna be a real nightmare. You have to make the call, maybe you can wire it back and feel safe. I just don't know. I would hope and suspect the convertor...I have no idea how they rebuild them but it looks like they are cut and welded... prime candidate for imbalance to me. GL
That is what i was thanking about, How far back will the convertor slide back? Did you know that the 400 convertor is different than the 351m?
Hmmm, no I didn't, is it (different converter, that is)???
As I recall, the converter will slip back just far enough to rotate freely, I think like .25" clearance of the studs max to the plate. This is why I would tie it back good. A little vibration and it might walk itself back out. But it is an easy test, 4 nuts and some baleing wire.
While you're under there you can see if there is any run-out in the flex plate also. GL
every ford auto trans i've ever stuffed has trapped the studs in the flex with the converter as far into the pump as it will go. have you done a compression check? i would. double check the firing order? sounds stupid but it's easy to mix one up. look at the plug wires while the engine is running in the dark? it has to be very dark, so dark your eyes have to adjust. all new tune-up parts? you can get a bad wire out of a new box. high quality distributor cap? a cheap one is no bargain. push all the wires on again? check the plug gaps? vacuum leak? don't take anything for granted, plastic fittings crack and rubber splits, metal fittings can crack too. hopefully it's something that can be fixed in three minutes once you find it, and not a component mismatch
