steering locking up?

I have a 96 f250 that the steering keeps locking up on. I’m getting a lot of grinding (not rubbing) noise from just behind the steering wheel it sounds like a bearing is out and binding up the steering.
The question, is there a bearing right behind the wheel that could do that and is it some thing an average wrench can fix
thanks

I would put the truck on a jack and check the ball joints, they can get really sticky with the weight of the truck on them if they are worn. my 97 is making a bad noise when turning and when the front wheels go up or down. If yours makes noise also when the front end travels up and down that could indicate ball joints also. if you don't already own a ball joint removal tool you could probably do it yourself if you got one. It's not rocket science just messy and a little aggravating.

yes, there are two bearings in the column right behind the wheel about 4 to 6 inches. I replaced the bearings in the wifes thunderchicken about a year ago. Not too much work. You can find the bearings and diagram of the column here. Hope this helps. duece
