Down a quart on 4.6?

2000 4.6 4X4 Expy new to me
2002 VW TDI bought new
(They say opposites atract)

Ready to take 2K Expy for my first regular service. I have 65000 miles. Is it normal to loose a quart of oil in 5000 miles. I know the previous owner had the dealer fix an oil leak according to the vehicles history. I don't see any indication of this now.

Bless those who dwell under the stars

The 4.6 and 5.4 have been known to drink a bit excessively. Don't worry too much about it or have the oil changed every 3,500-4,000 miles.

I would not worry much about one quart in 5000 miles. Do you know what oil is in it? I would not be surprised if consumption increased a little with 5w20. I am running 5w30 in my 1999 5.4.

Thanks Buzzard and Bubba for putting my mind at ease. I would likely class the miles as severe service with all the cold weather we had. I also had a lot of stop and go local stuff, cold starts and loaded hwy driving. What kind of oil do you guys run in summer.

I run 5w30 year round. That is what is shown on my oil filler cap. I think 5w20 is recommended for years after 1999(?)- actually I am not so sure that Ford has not issued a TSB that recommends 5w20 for earlier years. Maybe someone knows for sure.
If my fill cap said 5w20, I would use this through the warranty period at least. Check out the oil and lubrication forum for posts regarding 5w20.

5K miles per quart is great mileage particularly with the severe service you state. Use the Ford recommended grade, type and viscosity year round. It has worked for me for the last 126K miles, and in light duty service I get 5K miles per quart. Heavy duty summer towing of 5200 lbs in high mountains at high rpms gets me 3500 miles per quart. That's when I change it and filter anyway. I use Motorcraft syn blend. Cheap and excellent in my book!

My 1999 4.6 with 72k is typically down about a half-quart at the 3,000-mile mark. All vehicles consume some quantity of oil, particularly diesels.

I don't know which oil is in it now but I think I'm going to use a synthetic for the truck from now on. Synthetics are pretty pricey up here, especially if you get it done in the shop! I think they perform good in extream heat and cold. Pretty much the kind of climate we have up here. As I am writing this it is snowing like crazy. The tulips are in shock. It will probably be 75 degress tomorrow.

Since I just bought the wife a 2002 Mustang, I inherited the Expedition. Luck for me I took it in for an oil change last week. She couldnt recall how many miles she drove since the last one and I am so glad to find out this oil consumption is normal. The Expy doesnt smoke or drip a bit, so at first I was shocked to see how little was left on the dip stick. I wont say how long it was since the last oil change, but rest assured neither of our new (to us) Fords will go unchecked in the future.

I have 2000 miles on the last oil change, and have added 1/2 quart about a week ago. It is now down a tiny bit below the full mark, so I would guess our consumption is about 1 quart every 4000 miles. (I usually change around 3000 miles.)
We now have about 64,500 miles on it. We bought it a a little over a year ago with around 51,000 miles on it. It does not smoke or leak at all.

I know that feeling in the pit of your stomach too when I pulled the dipstick for the first time on this truck. It was at the min level. The last three trucks I owned never burned anywhere near this. Like what has been said, mine will be checked with every fill up from now on!

Question

Since this oil usage is so common with the tritons, has anyone had success with
re&re pvc valve. Dad had chev 454 in an RV that this did wonders for.

I just changed mine a week ago...time will tell.

I'd recommend doing the swap as a new PCV is only $1.
